Heat pressing looks simple — heat, press, peel — but consistent results come from understanding a small number of variables and how they interact. Whether you are pressing your first sublimation mug at home or running a busy production bench, the same fundamentals apply. Before you begin: the golden rule of heat press settings
Every number in this guide is a tested starting point, not a guarantee. Two presses set to the same displayed temperature can behave differently, and two blanks or two rolls of vinyl from different suppliers can respond differently to the same recipe. Coating quality, garment blend, ambient humidity and even the age of your press all shift the result.
So treat published settings as your first attempt, press a test piece, then adjust. When something goes wrong, change one variable at a time so you can see what actually fixed it. That single habit — controlled testing rather than guessing — is what separates consistent results from wasted stock.
The most important setting on any product you buy is the one printed on its own instructions. For sublimation blanks, that is the pressing instructions tab on the product page. For DTF transfers and vinyl, it is the film or roll manufacturer's spec sheet. The charts below reflect those sources and give you a reliable default when a specific sheet isn't in front of you.
The four variables every heat press setting comes down to
Almost every heat press instruction — for sublimation, DTF or vinyl — is really just four numbers or choices. Get these right and you can press anything.
1. Temperature
Temperature is how hot the platen is when it touches your product, measured in degrees Celsius (°C) in Australia and Fahrenheit (°F) on many imported machines and instruction sheets. It drives the chemistry: sublimation ink only turns to gas and bonds within a specific range, DTF and vinyl adhesives only activate above a threshold, and every material has a ceiling above which it scorches, yellows or warps.
The number on your press controller is not always the true platen temperature. Cheaper elements can run 10–20°C hotter or cooler than displayed, and large platens often have cool corners or hot spots. If your results don't match the recipe, verify the real surface temperature with an infrared thermometer or heat-sensitive temperature strips before blaming the settings. A quick conversion: 150°C ≈ 300°F, 160°C ≈ 320°F, 190°C ≈ 375°F, 200°C ≈ 390°F.
2. Time (dwell time)
Time is how long the platen stays closed on the product, in seconds. It gives the heat time to travel through the transfer or into the coating. Too short and the bond is incomplete; too long and you risk scorching, dull colour or "gassing out" on sublimation. Longer is not automatically better — each material has an optimal window.
3. Pressure
Pressure is the force pushing the platen against the product, usually described as light, medium or firm rather than an exact figure on most consumer presses. It ensures full, even contact so heat and adhesive transfer uniformly. As a rough feel guide: light pressure closes with gentle resistance, medium takes a firm push to latch, and firm requires real effort to close the handle. Thicker items need the pressure re-set — a setting dialled in for a t-shirt will be far too light once you add a thick hoodie or a mouse mat.
- Even pressure matters as much as the amount. Seams, zippers, buttons and the raised edges of hard blanks create high and low spots. Use a heat press pillow or foam pad to lift the print area above obstructions so pressure lands evenly.
- Check your corners. If one side of a print adheres and another lifts, uneven platen pressure is the usual culprit.
4. The peel (hot, warm or cold)
The fourth choice isn't a number — it's when you remove the carrier film or backing after pressing. It is decided by the product, and getting it wrong will lift or distort an otherwise perfect print.
- Hot peel — remove immediately while still hot. Fast for production.
- Warm peel — wait a few seconds until hand-warm.
- Cold peel — wait until fully cool to the touch before peeling. Common for glitter vinyl and most DTF transfers.
Preparing to press: the steps before you set a single number
Good settings can't rescue a poorly prepared press or product. Run through this every session:
- Pre-press the garment. Close the press on the blank garment for 2–5 seconds first. This drives out moisture and flattens wrinkles, which is one of the biggest hidden causes of poor adhesion and faded sublimation.
- Use a protective cover sheet. A sheet of butcher/parchment paper or a reusable Teflon sheet protects both the platen and the print from scorching and shine, and is essential for a DTF second press and for layering vinyl.
- Match the method to the material. Dye sublimation only works on polyester or specially poly-coated blanks — it will not bond to natural cotton. DTF and vinyl, by contrast, apply to cotton, polyester and blends. Choosing the wrong method is the number-one reason a "perfect" press still fails.
- Position and protect. On dark or thick garments, slip a pillow inside so you press only one layer, and make sure no back-of-garment seams sit under the print area.
Heat press settings for sublimation
Dye sublimation uses heat to turn solid dye into a gas that permanently bonds into a polyester or poly-coated surface. Because the dye becomes part of the material, results are washfast and won't crack — but the surface must be sublimation-ready. Most sublimation runs live in a tight band: roughly 185–200°C, with time varying enormously by how much mass the heat has to penetrate (seconds for fabric, minutes for stone).

Hard blanks like mugs, slate and glass hold a lot of heat and can keep "cooking" after the press opens. Heat press settings for DTF transfers
DTF (Direct to Film) transfers are printed onto a film, coated with adhesive powder and cured, then heat-pressed onto the garment. Because the design sits on top of the fabric as a thin, flexible layer, DTF works on almost any material — cotton, polyester, blends, light or dark — which makes it hugely versatile. The settings below are for applying a ready-made (pre-printed) DTF transfer, which is what most people press.

Cold peel is the safe default for DTF and generally gives the most reliable adhesion, but it is film-specific — a hot-peel film peeled cold (or vice versa) can distort or lift the print. If you don't know, peel a test cold, then trial a warm peel to see which your film prefers. The second press through parchment or a Teflon sheet noticeably improves wash resistance, so don't skip it.
Note the difference between applying a finished transfer (above) and curing a freshly printed one. Heat press settings for heat transfer vinyl (HTV)
Heat transfer vinyl — also called HTV or iron-on vinyl — is a coloured, cut-and-weeded film with a heat-activated adhesive backing, applied through a clear carrier sheet. It is the go-to for names, numbers, logos and simple multi-colour designs on apparel. Most standard HTV presses in a narrow band around 150–160°C for 10–15 seconds with medium pressure, but specialty vinyls differ, so use the type-by-type chart below. Layering and multi-colour HTV
When stacking one colour on top of another, don't fully press every layer for the full time — you'll over-cook the lower layers. Instead, tack each new layer with a short 2–5 second press, build your design, then give the whole stack one final full-time press through a cover sheet. Always press HTV through a Teflon or parchment sheet to protect the surface, and confirm each vinyl's peel type before lifting the carrier.
HTV adhesion is far more sensitive to pressure than beginners expect. If edges lift after washing, the fix is usually firmer, more even pressure — not more heat or time. Troubleshooting your heat press settings
When a press goes wrong, the symptom usually points straight to the variable at fault. Change one thing, re-test, and confirm.

Most "settings" problems are actually pressure or moisture problems in disguise. Before you keep raising the temperature — which is the instinct that causes scorching — pre-press to remove moisture and confirm your pressure is firm and even. Raise heat only as a last resort.
Frequently asked questions about heat press settings
What temperature should a heat press be for sublimation?
Most sublimation sits between 185°C and 200°C. Polyester fabric and apparel are typically pressed around 190°C, while hard blanks such as mugs, slate and glass also run at 190–200°C but need much longer dwell times. Always follow the pressing instructions for the specific blank, since coatings vary.
What are the correct settings for applying DTF transfers?
As a reliable default, pre-press the garment for 2–5 seconds, then press the transfer at 150–165°C for 10–15 seconds with medium-firm pressure. Is more time or higher temperature always better?

Hot peel or cold peel — how do I know which?
